A Little Light for You. (Release notes)
The track ‘A Little light for you’ was Recorded, Mixed and Mastered by Simon McKenna at Albury Sound Studios.
Although i’m fond of introducing it onstage as a song written about ’two ex-girlfriends,’ combined into one track so as to ‘Kill two birds with one stone.’ Essentially, it was written about the same situation. I initially had the guitar riff and the line ‘I’m worried about you dear’ following a long and difficult break up. I was still very attached but at the same time trying to start a new life, and, i’d met someone else. The last line in the verse is about not realising that i’d found a new love, being blind as it flourished. In all truthfulness, it was probably the worst period of my life, very uncertain. I struggled to let go of the past and had an unhealthy compulsion to self sabotage my own happiness.
Ultimately, the song is an idealistic prayer. It’s the idea that anyone you’ve loved will still have a deep and understanding connection. That the bonds formed through relationship are stronger than time or distance and that when stripped down to their core allow us to be our selves, to be revered and soar above the mundane and everyday happenings that conspire to keep us down. I’d like to think that any of my past ‘loves’ could call me up and i’d be there for them. That I could cheer them up if they’re down and help them forget their worries and fly with me for a while..
This is the second time that i’ve recorded the track ‘A Little Light for you’. The first time around was in a session with an old good friend named Jerome ‘J Rokka’ O’Connell in his basement in Bristol way back in 2011. Although it was well recorded and contained some fantastic Cello work from Jerome, it lacked in composition. I had some feedback from industry at the time and they felt that it didn’t utilise it’s potential as a track. I’d always wanted to re-record it and in 2016 I started to rewrite a lot of my old material. Working with my now partner of 11 years at home gave it new life because it allowed me the time to work on ideas and structure in the song. I re-arranged the track and with Emily’s help we created a new ending based around the idea’s and melody i’d had written with Jerome, 5 years previous.
We went in to record with Simon at Albury Sound Studios in June this year and he really had some great suggestions for picking the guitar section up at the end by playing the same chords in different positions on the fret board. I really wanted a live drummer for the track and when Simon informed me that Jeremy Vacarro was free and up for it, we were ready to go. We recorded all the parts in a day and Simon then went on to mix the track. Emily came in and recorded her Violin part in 2 takes, and to be honest the first was as good as the second. We decided to drop the Bass track and use the notes from the lower end Guitar sound and Simon nailed the track in the second mix. I really can’t thank him enough for his input. I feel we have really captured something special and hope that you enjoy the track.
A Little light for you is due for release in November 2019
